My brother, parents and I sailed on the Gripsholm in the summer of 1951 from New York to Gothenburg. A Russian diplomat, Jacob Malik, and his family were on the ship. They were up in first class. We were in tourist class. His secretary and family were own in tourist class with us. They sat at the dining table next to us. They had a little boy, named Boris Borisos (sp?) about age 5.

Första Kungsholm i SALs ägo sattes i trafik 1928.

Mvh. A Filipsson, Handen-Stockholm

It was very interesting to see yr well organised homepages and I will study more closely later. Besides my general interest, I am interested in info/photos of SAL's steamer from the Baltic states to Kalmar, the BORGHOLM bought from Denmark in 192 and trading till abt. 1936. Can anybody help me?

My father, Harold S. Dunn was part of the first prisoner exchange of WWII. He was repatriated from Bridge House Prison in Shanghai, China in 1942. He arrived in New York in September, 1942. He was General Manager of Warner Bros. Pictures in Asia from 1931 to 1942. I'm looking for information on that historic 1942 voyage with the repatriated prisoners.

I was doing research on an item I found at a local (Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A.). I will take pictures of it and send them to you. Maybe you can give me some insight as to what it was used for, some say a master salt, others a chalis for communion,I'm not >sure. Even more than that I am a tugboat captain living in Baltimore so the site is very interesting to me for the maritime history aspect of it. The fact that people are keeping history alive is a very powerfull thing in my opinion, as history is my most interesting thing, I love antiques of all kinds. Also maritime history is a big part of that I guess my background would give me away in that respect. I gotta run for now but I will email you pictures of the object in question, it is from the T/S Drottninholm. ThanksWayne

Born in Gothenburg and the last generation at sea, I made part of my career at sea in SAL on Maltesholm (US Gulfcoast/ Canada) and Blankaholm ( from Wärtsilää to US eastcoast)as engineer. Coming from that part of SAL is maybe not the same. But it was a good and interesting time. Best regards Jan Ericsson

Actually, my sister (see message below) is wrong; we sailed from New York to Copenhagen. It was a wonderful voyage. My 75-year-old mother viewed the site with me and was thrilled at some of the familiar images. She still has one of the menus with the sailing ship on it. My own memory was jogged by that photo. I remember sitting at our table every day and choosing from the tastiest food selections. I remember being so adventurous (I was nearly 7) and choosing SWORDFISH. Ooooh! My mother often talks about how attentive our steward, Oscar, was with us. Any news of him? Sorry, we don't remember his last name. But, we traveled in first class, if that's a help. We traveled with the Petiney family, another U.S. Army member who was stationed with us in Odense, DK. The Petineys were great traveling companions and we had a ball on the voyag Thanks for the nostalgia trip. Thanks for the memory

I worked aboard the MS Kungsholm between approximately 1977 – 1979. The ship was owned/managed at the time by Flagship Cruses and I was one of the few people on-board when she sailed to Bremenhaven to get refitted after being purchased by P&O During my time on-board I worked many positions. My first job was in the kitchen with the Italian cooks and was the only American in the kitchen at the time. I was a fixture at the end of the line on many a “midnight buffets” For about a year I worked for Luigi on the deck as deck boy and made hamburgers, hot dogs in the snack bar. “Nice and Shiny” was Luigi’s mantra. We conducted the “horse races” and I recall being apt at tucking the blankets under the bottoms of our mostly elderly female passengers. I was often asked to escort the Captain’s lovely young wife and baby ashore which was the greatest of all honors for me but can’t for the life of me recall either of their names. Robert, from New York City was the ships' florist and was a good friend of mine as was otto Salvano from Milan, he was a cook. At one point I circulated petition to all crew demanding cleaner crew bathrooms. The Purser was NOT amused and considered this action paramount to mutiny on my part but those restrooms where disgusting with thick mod in the shower stalls and a strong smell of urine. That was just before I took a leave of absence for about a month for a bit of RR. When I returned from my vacation I was not given my assignment until after we left port, and discovered that my new job was to clean all crew bathrooms! It was the best assignment I ever had, plenty of free time and I was able to go ashore at every opportunity. For those of you that remember such mundane things, you’ll recall that the bathrooms were kept very clean during the last world cruse of the MS Kungsholm. I recall with fondness the experiences of my time aboard ship and am glad to have found this website to relate some of my experiences. Today I am an innkeeper of a small hotel in New England. Visit our website and make sure you stop by to visit if you’re ever in the area.

I worked aboard Gripsholm #1 from April 1947 the fall of 1950.Started in pantry, then in 3rd class dining room.I also worked in the store room as well as in the bars. I have many good memories of fellow crew members. We did have a soccer teamwhich played in New York against other ship lines. One of the matches was in the hottest time of the year, 100 degrees and 90 percent humidity. I got a sunstroke and had to be carried back to the ship, recuperated in three days. I now live in Evergreen Colorado and I often think back to those days and wonder what happened to the people I worked with. I shortened my name to Peter Johansson. Do you have anyone corresponding with you from that era?

What a great surprise to find this site! I was employed as salesperson by Thorsten Hanson in 1956, worked with his successor and cruise director Charles Johnson (dec'd 1999) transferred to Los Angeles and Seattle as District Sales Manager, chosen to conduct the Christmas voyage of New KUNGSHOLM in 1966 NY/COP/GBG. Have photos. Married Thorsten Hanson's secretary in 1959. Look forward to visiting and exploring this site. Am board member of Scandinavian Cultural Center in Thousand Oaks, CA and hope to find ways of promoting this site and SAL history among our members and the Scan-American community on the West Coast. Of all the ships I've worked on, the Regent Sea (Gripsholm) held the best and most vivid memories (and love affairs!)of the ealry '90's. It may have been known as "K-Mart Cruises", but it was a wonderful experience. Having gone from Princess, to Regency to Holland America and finally Royal Carribean as of now, I can attest to the various types and sizes of ships. Too bad they went bankrupt and the old girl sat rusting in freeport for so long.

My father returned from Europe aboard the John Ericsson in 1945 so I would like to hear from anyone who might have sailed aboard her at that time, but would like to hear from any and all who have stories of this great ship. It is wonderful to see such enthusiasm continuing for Swedish America. I have just returned from a cruise aboard Victoria and have to say she is the most attractive liner I have ever sailed on. (so I can understand why you are enthusiastic.) Swedish American designed a ship of great beauty and her wood panelled interiors are supurb. P&O are talking about withdrawing the ship at the end of 2003. Hopefully she will find a sympathetic buyer who will keep the ship in service for many more years. Besides Victoria my only other connection with Swedish America was a visit to the Kungsholm of 1953 when she visited my home in Sydney as the Columbus C. Although Kungsholm 3/Victoria was far better suited to a role as a full time cruise ship, I could see that the Kungsholm 2 had that special something that set Swedish America liners apart. All the best,

Regards Stephen

When I was ten years old my grandparents traveled to Sweden on board The Kungsholm. What an exciting event this was for me, as I was given a tour of this beautiful ship before she set sail. That was over forty years ago, but I still have the photos that my family took that day in New York before she set sail. My grandparents had a wonderful voyage and memories that lasted them a lifetime. They are both gone now, but I can still recall all the amazing stories that they told me about their crossing the mighty Atlantic Ocean on board this beautiful lady of the sea.

Fick adressen via Sjöfartsmuseet i Göteborg.

I was electrician on Kungsholm 1962-63, (caribean and a south pacific). It would be great to get in contact with old shipmates again. I live in Stockholm. Remember where the following sign was placed?

"En kamel kan arbeta i en vecka utan att dricka, en norrman kan dricka i en vecka utan att arbeta"!

Hello! Thanks for your great initiativ! Worked on Gripsholm 1968 as assistant bar-steward and on Kungsholm 1969 as assistant cabin-steward on A-deck. Celebrated my 50 anniversary 1999 with my wife on a cruise for 2 weeks, on Victoria, in the West Indies. A dream really came trough, we even lived at the same deck where I had been working, and I well recognised my pantry and everything and of course spoke to my successor! What an incredible attention I was shown by Captain Chris Sample and Purser Zak Coombs when they learned that I had been working there 30 years ago! They even offered me to bring along some fellows from that time when Victoria would arrive to Copenhagen. The promise was kept in a most brilliant way latest August. We were 5 persons that first were exclusively shown the ship from bridge to kitchen and engineroom. Then served a wonderful lunch in the passengers dining-room, where we by then got photos of our group taken on the bridge togeather with the Captain by the ships photographer. Actually I plan to make a new cruise this summer on Victoria in the Mediterranian. P&O are running the ship in a very good way and it is still maintained with new parts, intending to keep it for a few more years, perhaps 5. They even call it the "Rolls Royce of the Seas" because of its seaworthyness!

Greetings! Göran Börjesson

Hej Lars!

Jag skall berätta en liten lustig historia från den tiden kanske kan du klippa in den någonstans under rubriken "Världen är liten";

What a treasure this site is! I am just becoming acquainted with the site and have not been through much of it yet, but I am estatic! The Swedish American Line has been an important part of the story of my family. My grandfather, Jorgen C. Berthelsen, became Assistant Passenger Traffic Manager in 1953 was manager of Swedish American Line German and Danish depts, and who knows what else. He was in this type of business all of his life. My parents went on cruises in the early sixties/late fifties on the Gripsholm. My brother crossed the atlantic from New York in 1967 (I think) on the Kungsholm. So needless to say there has been alot of conversation about the SAL throughout my life (of 48yrs). Lots of memorabelia around my parents home, my aunt and uncles home and the many cousins. Thank you for creating this wonderful method of "time travel". Beth Berthelsen Gamel

My wife and I crossed on the Kungsholm (#2 it seems, in the summer of 1960. By prior negotion with the company, I took many many hundreds of feet of 16mm motion picture film, with the intention of making a documentary film of the crossing. I had the run of the ship, including the ability to take photos in the engine room and on the bridge. In fact the ship was halted in mid-Atlantic so I could photograph the engine room telegraph positions as the ship was started again!

I never completed the preparation of the documentary, as I was sent to Vietnam in early 1962. But I have the assembled footage.I have been discussing the purchase of this film with the National Maritime Museum, Mr.Carl-Gunnar Olsson, Curator of Photoarchives is aware of my interest.

The incipient SAL reunion suddenly came to my attention through my interest in maritime subjects on the internet. I am determined to get this film into your hands, even prior to formal negotations for sale, if it is at all possible.

Let us see what can be done.

I was employed by Marine Photo service as a photographer, I joined the ship in Amsterdam in June 1973 and sailed with SAL until the ship was finally sold. I was onboard during the last voyage leaving pier 53 new york bound for Europe. At the time of sailing we did not know our final port of call there was much speculation, we found out the night before docking it was going to be South Sheilds nr Newcastle, England a very un-glamous last port of call.

I shared a cabin with Boris (sorry cannot remember surname he worked in the hairdressing salon) During my time onboard I worked with Brett Bowden who married a Swedish girl Siv I believe they settled in or near Malmo.

I look forward to meeting with some friends at the reunion.

Vilken dag! Tack!!

Signed on the Kungsholm on her maiden voyage 1966. Employed at the Pursers department - mostly as Crew Purser. What a great time we had onboard and what a great crew I had the opportunity to serve. Left the ship in 1972 after having met my wife Maija (Ahvonainen) from the Beauty Parlor onboard. We are looking forward to the SAL Reunion in Stockholm.

It is so interesting to find out that I am not the only one interested in the Kungsholm, now Victoria. My wife and I have been travelling as passengers on Victoria, then Sea Princess since 1982. Some 50 cruises later we are still in love with this beautiful ship and are looking forward to joining her in Sydney on 3 April for the voyage back to the UK. I know this ship so well now with the exception of how the First and tourist accommodation was split. Also where the wonderful wooden figures and others came from..some say the old Stockholm and that when the ship is scrapped it goes back to Sweden. Please if you know the answers, do let me know. Also if you want to keep in touch about this ship then mail me.I will be visiting her on the 15 February after her voyage round Africa( only 320 passengers) in Southhampton to put our baggage on board rather than take it by air to Australia. love to hear from fellow enthusiasts.

Hi all who are interested in the SAL . My interest stems from the purchase of a travelling trunk for my wife for her birhtday . I live in Melbourne Australia , and purchased the trunk ( Hartman USA ) in Queensland . It has a few stickers on it with the Gripsholm and Drottingholm both stuck to it . The Ladies name on the stickers is Laura Knuidsen or it could be Knudsen. One of the dates is 1936 . I am trying to find out more about mrs Knudsen . I will endeavour to digitally photograph the stickers for your archives . All the best , Anthont Farmer

I found the Stockholm's history since 1960 very interesting. I twice sailed on the Stockholm at age 5 in 1954. We traveled to Sweden in April and returned on the Stockholm in May. I made good friends with the son of the first mate, so my mothers says. We later learned that the roommate of our waiter was one that was killed in the 1956 collision. My mother sailed the other ships when she was a child. I have been looking for information about the ship in hopes of building a working radio controlled model. Do you know any sources of plans for the ship that I could purchase?

July 1959 Sailing on the Stockholm, New York to Copenhagen, (10 days)with about 50 exchange students bound for a year of study in Scandinavian Folkhojskoler in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark with the Scandinavian Seminars. Great voyage over -- but sadly it would be the last year ships were used by the majority of student travelers. Perhaps 4 days out of NYC we sailed through a collection of Portuges cod fishermen off Newfoundland, one to a boat, all veiled in a dense fog bank. Recently saw old documentary on this long gone fishing tradition, and it reminded me of leaning over the Stockholm's railing, hot coffee in tow, watching the tiny boats off the stern.

Thank you for a fantastic site! My father, Sigge Ekwall, worked onboard Gripsholm/Kungsholm as Chief Steward for many years. He also worked on the Stockholm and Kastelholm during the 40's and 50's. From 79' to 84' I worked as Asst Purser and Crewpurser on board the M/S Sagafjord of the NAL-fleet. I remember the former SAL-passengers still reminiscing about "the Mothership" (Gripsholm). Thanks again & Best regards

Nice site! It was especially interesting to read of the local newspaperman who was on the Stockholm at the time of the collision with the Andrea Doria. What do you think of the Stockholm -Italia Prima today?I am not sure how I feel about the ship, but one thing is sure, you cannot be neutral! What a drastic change! I don't think that I have ever seen anything quite like it. The fact that they were willing to make such a huge investment in such an old ship certainly is a testament to her quality. I read somewere recently that the original hull was said to be in very good shape except for something that had to do with the new bow that was fitted in the USA. Have you ever heard anything about this? I have been in contact with your friend Henrik Ljungström, and I am going over a book I have about the Leviathan to see if I can get him some new information that he doesn,t already have. Now I wish that I had purchased the rest of the set of books that Frank Braynard wrote about the Leviathan. There were about 10 or 12, but they were a bit pricey for me at the time, so I settled for just one.

Again, you have a very nice site, and I intend to visit it often. Keep up the good work. Your efforts provide much pleasure to those of us who like to study the great liners.Thank you for doing it! Bob Russell

A really interesting site. I sailed as radio officer aboard Cunards RMS Caronia 1961-1964. Every June Caronia would embark on a North Cape cruise from New York. The Gripsholm salled from New York at the same time and was our constant companion, either a port ahead or a port behind us everywhere we went throughout Scandinavia and northern Europe. We got to know the radio officers on Gripsholm quite well via radio, although we never met. Ken

My first trip on MS Gripsholm was between New York and Goteborg, on May 1, 1962. At that time, I planned to work in Sweden for approximately 2 years and then return to my home in Montreal, Canada. Instead, I fell in love with the sea and the Gripsholm!

In May 1963, I mustered on the Gripsholm (as a stewardess) and stayed until May 1966. (I then switched to the new Kungsholm, where I worked until December 1966.)I have so many wonderful memories of the Gripsholm, and often wonder about other crew members and some of the great passengers. My last trip to Sweden was in May/June 1998 and, although Swedish was a third language for me, I can still speak, read and write it!!! Thanks for this opportunity to visit your guestbook.

Jette bra! Lars has already received a correspondence from my brother Gunnar about the Gripsholm. We both came over on the Gripsholm in 1951, immigrating from Goteborg to New York(eventually to Jamestown,NY). When I first saw the Gripsholm photo, I was deeply moved, since I was too young (4) to have recollected the voyage, though I have a photo of me on deck. What got me started on the quest to research the Gripsholm was the story of the Andrea Doria and the Stockholm, and I have gathered a lot of info on the tragedy, but not so much on the Storckholm. This is very exciting to see all of this stuff on Swedish ships. Please get in touch if you have time. My father's name was Tage, and my original name was Gert Ove, but growing up in the US, it was too hard for Americans to pronounce, so hence the change to Gary. Hej da.

Hejsan, you have a great and interesting page. I crossed in '53 to New york on the old Gripsholm and crossed the atlantic on the then new Gripsholm leaving Goteborg July 9, l957. That was the third crossing for the new ship. Looking at a dinner menu dated Friday, July l2, l957 the entre in the tourist class dining room was Roast Long Island Duckling. The a la carte menu included Poached Perch Pike with Egg Sauce. The small print notice at the bottom of the menu states "To-morrow at 4 a.m. the clocks will be retarded 60 minutes". One memory from one of these great SAL ships was our crossing in l953 when a storm came up and things got to rolling pretty good...especially for a young kid like me the first time out on the ocean. All the decks were closed off and the white table cloths in the dining areas were wetted down to keep dishes from sliding off.Along with my two brothers we sneaked up on the highest deck we could reach and looked across the water. One minute the waves looked like mountains coming at us and the next we were on top of it looking down. What a ride that was for a young boy and a trip that I will never forget. Thanks for the memories and best wishes to all.

Your site is very interesting. I'm an Italian passenger ship enthusiast and I particularly love the Swedish american Liners. Many of them have an Italian connection. the Kungsholm became the Home Line Italia, the post-war Gripsholm was built in Genoa, the two pre-war Stokholm were built in Monfalcone, and the last Stockohlm is now the Italian cruise ship Italia Prima. Also the postwar Kungsholm belonged for a while to the Italian Costa Line as the Columbus C.

All my compliment and appreciation to the glorious SAL

My mother, my sister and I sailed on both the Gripsholm and the Stockholm in 1952. My parents were immigrants from Sweden and when my grandmother was dying, we spent 3 months in Sweden with her. The pictures brought back lots of memories. Thank you.

Oh, I have ridden on so many Swedish American Lines in my life - too many to even say. YEAH right. But boy, I sure wish I had. They all look so fabulous. You have truly put a delightful site together. Everyday I learn something new.

I have a photo of myself on the U.S.S. Lexington, does that count for something? Truly magnificant information and photos, Lars.

I would like more photos of the ships! In my Magazine "Båtologen" we have publlished a complete history with a very detailed fleetlist of all ships belonging to the Swedish American Line since the beginning in 1915.

Your SAL Pages bring back may pleasant memories. I met my wife on the Gripsholm in 1961, and proposed to her on the Kungsholm in 1964 (she declined, but later accepted). I will see if i can find some old SAL things I have, and send you prints/photocopies.

I really enjoyed viewing your website of SAL, a great site, I have a lovely picture of Gripsholm as Regent Sea passing under Lions Gate Bridge, in Vancouver Canada on her way up to Alaska during the Alaska Cruise season a few years ago, this is my sons favourite ship, he loves the look of two funnels.

Would like to see more information about the TWO liners named Stockholm (1938 and 1941).

Read about your SAL site on the "Liners" Mailing List. Nice site - amazing how talented these ship people are! One observation...not a criticsm - the Regent Sea, currently laid up in Tampa Bay has had the "Regent" blacked out from her hull. So technically, today she is just "Sea".

Congrats again, nice place to visit.

Alan

Terrific to see a site for Svenska Amerika! Even through P&O mutlilated the last Kungsholm by removing her forward funnel, she is still with us and is a classic. I was last on her in Montreal in 1978 when P&O inspected her - by then she was owned by Flagship Cruises. Best of luck with your site and let us hope we will one day again see some Swedish participation in tne cruise market.

Sven

It was really great to find a homepage about Swedish American Line. I worked on the MS Gripsholm 1970-73, first as an assitant barsteward for a couple of months, then as a Main Lounge steward and finally as a steward in Forward Bar and Aft Bar. Those were years I remember with joy
