Hugo Bilén

Hugo Bilén mustered on the Drottningholm in 1928, at the age of 24, and became Chief Purser in 1937. He served 17 years on the first Gripsholm. Bilén was a successful athlete in his youth. The U.S. Merchant Marine ribbon bars on Hugo Bilén's jacket show that he served on the Gripsholm during WWII.

B004. Outside the Gripsholm's Purser's Office. Curt Dawe and Hugo Bilén in the background. Rune Dahlstrand (barber on the Gripsholm during WWII) has identified the second person from right as Morgan. In the list of officers below, from a New Year's crossing in 1951, C Morgan is listed as Chief Purser, and Curt Dawe as Information Officer. Perhaps Hugo Bilen was on shore leave over the holidays, or serving on the MS Stockholm of 1949. The plot thickens... List of officers in a passenger list from 1951. Contributed by Eric Sakara.
