Kalle Tårta

My name is Karl-Gösta Ekblad, and during the Kungsholm years I got the nickname Kalle Tårta [literally “Charlie Cake” in English] from my workmate Janne Hahne who was a confectioner at that time. Everyone onboard knew me as Kalle Tårta, and nothing else. Still to this day I keep using the name Kalle Tårta, e.g. in my email address.

Many thanks to Hasse Gustafsson and Tommy Stark
for contributing this story.

At Söderström’s Confectionery (founded 1934) in Lidköping Kalle Tårta learned the fine craft of pastry making,  awarding him a journeyman’s certificate as a Confectioner after 3.5 years of dedicated practice and training.

A lot of the fine pastry onboard was made in the bakery on C-deck before going up to the confectionery located on the port side of the main kitchen area, just forward of the main dining room on A-deck.
